Ponderings

When you are bored just think about a few things…

  1. If poison expires, is it more poisonous or is it no longer poisonous?
  2. Which letter is silent in the word “Scent,” the S or the C?
  3. Do twins ever realize that one of them is unplanned?
  4. Why is the letter W, in English, called double U? Shouldn’t it be called double V?
  5. Maybe oxygen is slowly killing you and It just takes 75-100 years to fully work.
  6. Every time you clean something, you just make something else dirty.
  7. The word “swims” upside-down is still “swims”.
  8. 100 years ago everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars. Today everyone has cars and only the rich own horses.
  9. If you replace “W” with “T” in “What, Where and When”, you get the answer to each of them.
  10. If you rip a hole in a net, there are actually fewer holes in it than there were before.

What is Chardi Kala?

Chardi Kala means keep your morale (spirits) high no matter what the situation is. Have faith and keep doing good and stay positive , leave rest to God. This positive thinking will give you calm , peaceful and positive mind that doesn’t get bothered with obstacles of life , you will be in charhdi kala (high spirits ) always.

Sikhs are always happy because of the “Charhdi Kala” given to them by Guru Gobind Singh, the Tenth Sikh Guru.

This concept is commonly translated as “high morale,” but it is much more than that. According to Encylopedia of Sikhism,

“It stands for a perennially blossoming, unwilting spirit, a perpetual state of certitude resting on unwavering belief in Divine justice.”

Word “Kala” of Sanskrit origin has several shades of meaning, but the dominant among which is “energy.” Chardhi in Punjabi means rising, ascending, soaring. So “Charhdi Kala” means an intensely “engergized”, ever-ascending state of the spirit of an individual or a group.

If someone asks a Sikh (Ki haal hai) (How are you?), his answer would be “In “Charhdi Kala!” meaning I am in ascending spirits even when he might be in great pain or sorrow!

Sikh meditate and pray everyday. The prayer is concluded with the following liturgy:

Nanak Naam Charhdi Kala tere bhane sarbat da bhala.

In the name of Guru Nanak, let there by ascending spirit and welfare of all.

So a Sikh prays not only for himself or his family, but also for all living beings in the universe. When you have this kind of spirit and operate at that level, this brings happiness – Charhdi Kala just happens!

A Sikh prayer cannot be complete without praying for the welfare of all. So this spirit has a lot to do with the power of prayer.

It is a mental stage that keeps a person strong during the most difficult moment in life – even when one is facing a life and death situation. The spirit of defiance of all hardships is very much part of it. Sikhs are tenacious people who do not lose faith! Even when they lose, they do not know if they have lost because they never accept defeat!

This spirit of “Charhdi Kala” is unique to the Sikhs.

When the Traditionalists got a Big Jolt

Way back in 1937, two young long-haired women in saris stepped into a small photo studio in Madras.

They changed into striped pyjama suits and struck a pose in front of the studio camera.

One of them leaned languidly against a chair, while the other’s eyes focused on something outside the frame.

Both of them held cigarettes perhaps just for the thrill of it.

That’s world-renowned Carnatic vocalist MS Subbulakshmi and the legendary Bharatanatyam dancer Balasaraswati who were just having a bit of fun.

The two teenaged friends both became world-famous artists. From strictly disciplined households, the two asserted their independence by secretly arranging this photograph of themselves dressed outrageously in Western-style sleepwear and pretending to smoke cigarettes.

This iconic photograph was first made public only 73 years later, in the 2010 biography of Balasaraswati penned by her son-in-law Douglas Knight J.

By this time, the successful careers of these artists were so highly revered over decades, almost deified, that this picture quite suddenly threw light on a whole new aspect of their lives – just two young friends attempting to do something unconventional.

The stir caused by the release of the photograph among fans of both luminaries is perhaps understandable, particularly in the case of Subbulakshmi.

It is a very important picture that goes to show that not everyone was born with a nine-yard saree or does everything traditionally.

That is our own perspective, and we don’t like things that fall out of it. We all need a jolt sometimes.

Repentance

This iconic photograph depicts the end of the career of matador Alvaro Munero. In the midst of the battle, he suddenly, in remorse, sat down at the edge of the arena. After, in an interview, Alvaro will tell: “Suddenly I saw not horns, but the eyes of a bull. He stood in front of me and looked at me. Just stood and watched, making no attempt to attack. The very innocence that all animals have in their eyes looked at me with a plea for help. It was like a cry for justice and somewhere deep inside me, I suddenly realized that he was addressing me the way we address God in prayer: “I don’t want to fight you, please spare me, because I did you nothing wrong. Kill me if you want, if you will, but I do not want to fight with you. ” And I, reading it in his eyes, felt like the worst creature on earth and interrupted the battle. After that I became a vegetarian and started fighting bullfighting. “

This story was published back in 2012. After thousands of other foreign publications told about this case, millions learned about the matador Alvaro Munero, and the photo became one of the most recognizable.
